01 Overview

Northampton’s flat-rate local moving crew

Smooth Movers has been hauling households across the Pioneer Valley since 2017, and we built the company around one idea: a college town deserves an honest flat number instead of an hourly meter that runs faster the harder the move gets. We are a licensed Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods mover with USDOT/MC authority, our own trucks sit in our own Northampton yard, and the same crew that wraps your dresser downtown is the crew that sets it back up at the new place. No subcontractors, no day labor, no carriers we hand you off to.

Whether the job is in Amherst or downtown Northampton, Pioneer Valley moving crew hands you one flat number up front and holds it — nothing creeps onto the bill on move day.

We know the way moves really go around here

A local move here is not a slab-on-grade ranch with a two-car garage. It is a second-floor walk-up off Pleasant Street, a 1900s Victorian in Florence with a full attic and a basement to clear, or a triple-decker in the flats where the original staircase turns twice and barely clears a box spring. Our crew chiefs know which dressers come apart at the door, how to float a sofa around a tight historic-district landing, and where the on-street parking permit has to go so the truck is not ticketed mid-load.

What a flat rate gets you

  • A walkthrough or detailed phone inventory, then one price locked before move day
  • Floor protection rated for snow melt, salt, and mud-season grit
  • Furniture pads, shrink wrap, dollies, and straps included, not billed as extras
  • Bed, table, and shelving teardown and rebuild at the far end
  • A $110 deposit that holds the date and comes right off the total

The college calendar runs our year

From the May move-out wave to the August and September flood around the Five Colleges, our board fills in predictable bursts. Grad students churning leases, faculty heading out on sabbatical, families upsizing from a downtown apartment to a cape in Leeds; we schedule all of it, and we schedule around Nor’easters in the off-season so your stuff is not riding out an ice storm in the back of a truck. Book a few weeks ahead in peak windows and you get the crew and the date you want.

Whether it is a one-bedroom near Thornes or a four-bedroom out toward Westhampton, you get a real licensed crew, our own equipment, and a number you can trust. Get my free moving quote and we will price your move honestly.

What’s included

  • One flat price for your Pioneer Valley move, set before truck day so there are no hourly surprises
  • The same uniformed Smooth Movers crew loads in NoHo and unloads at your new place across the valley
  • Heavy floor runners and door jamb pads laid against snow, mud, and road salt on every entryway
  • Stair-and-banister protection for steep narrow original staircases and triple-decker walk-ups
  • Pads, shrink wrap, and dollies for furniture, plus disassembly and reassembly of beds and tables
  • $110 deposit to lock your date, applied straight to the final bill

How the price gets set

We start with a short walkthrough or video survey, and from your actual inventory we set one flat Pioneer Valley rate — no hourly meter buried anywhere inside it. Whatever that quote reads is the whole price, with nothing added once the truck is loaded or a Nor’easter pushes the date.

02 How we protect your move

We handle what you own the way we would want ours handled

Every truck rolls out stocked with pads, shrink film, and heavy floor runners — ready to blanket furniture, keep original hardwood and stair treads clean through snow and road salt, and cushion the breakables, whether it is an 1890s Victorian in town, a converted-mill loft in Easthampton, or a downtown triple-decker with a freight elevator to reserve.

Quilted pads

Dressers, harvest tables, and headboards get blanketed right where they stand, with the padding on well before anything heads for the stairs.

Stretch film

Drawers stay shut and cushions stay clean — wrapped tight so basement dust and a wet, salted walk to the curb never touch the fabric.

Floor & doorway guards

Runners down, banisters wrapped, jambs padded — the first thing we do at both homes, so a century-old staircase and refinished floors look untouched after we pull out.

Built-to-fit crating

Right there in the room, before anything fragile leaves it, we measure a mirror, glass tabletop, framed canvas, or flat screen corner to corner and build the crate around it for a tight, exact fit.

Break-down & rebuild

Bed frames, dining tables, and sectionals come apart to ride safe, and once they are up the new stairs our crew puts every one back together.

Straps, dollies & gear

A steep third-floor walk-up, a tight historic-district turn, or the single heaviest piece in the house — each one calls up the right tie-downs and rigging off our truck, and none of it gets left behind.

03 Why us

Whatever name is painted on the truck is the same one signed at the bottom of your contract

Book Smooth Movers and the truck that pulls up to your Victorian is ours, the contract is ours, and the uniformed crew easing your sofa down those narrow original stairs is on our Pioneer Valley payroll — your job is never sold off. A broker runs the opposite way: they auction your move to whoever bids cheapest that week, then step out of the picture for good.

Smooth Movers
  • The trucks are ours and the full-time, background-checked movers riding in them are on our payroll — we never round out a crew with day labor off a listing board
  • The number we write down is the number you pay — set, signed, and accurate to the dollar before a single box is lifted
  • One crew start to finish, from the first piece out the old door to the last one set down in the new place
  • Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for interstate runs, and every job carried on full insurance with up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage
  • A single point of contact at one Northampton office, with you from that first call right through to the last box carried inside
What a broker does
  • Hands your move to whatever crew underbids the rest in the week you happen to call
  • Watches the total creep upward once moving day arrives, padded with charges nobody raised when you signed
  • Puts people you have never once spoken to inside your front door, leaving your whole household in the hands of a crew you cannot vouch for
  • Leaves it murky which insurer foots the bill the day a flat screen hits the floor
  • Drops a call center in the gap between you and whoever finally turns up to load, so one plain question becomes a runaround

Questions we hear about this service

Do you cover Amherst, Easthampton, and Hadley, or just Northampton itself?
We run local moves across all of Hampshire County and the wider Pioneer Valley out of our Northampton base. Amherst, Easthampton, Hadley, South Hadley, Holyoke, Florence, and Leeds are all everyday runs for our crews, and a cross-valley hop over the Coolidge Bridge or down Route 9 stays a local flat-rate job.
August move-in around Smith and the Five Colleges gets crazy. How early should I book?
Late August and early September fill first because the whole Five-College calendar turns over at once. If you are moving in or out around Smith, UMass, Amherst, Hampshire, or Mount Holyoke, get your date on our board three to four weeks ahead and we will hold it with the deposit.
How does the flat rate compare to paying by the hour?
Hourly runs $179/hr for two movers and a truck or $249/hr for three, but most local jobs we quote as one flat number that opens at $415 for a studio or one-bedroom. You see the whole price up front instead of watching a clock while we carry your couch down three flights.
