01 Overview

Easthampton used to make buttons and brushes; now the old brick mills along the Manhan and around Nashawannuck Pond are full of loft condos, studios, and small shops, and that mix changes how you move here. A converted-mill loft is not a typical apartment, and a working artist’s studio is not a typical living room. Smooth Movers has done enough of both that we plan for them on day one. We are a real, licensed Massachusetts (MDPU) and USDOT/MC moving company based up the road in Northampton, with our own trucks and our own uniformed crews handling both ends of every job.

Moving somewhere around here? Northampton, MA movers runs these Pioneer Valley streets, Victorians, and walk-up triple-deckers week in and week out.

Mill lofts and the gear that comes with them

The freight elevators in the mill buildings are a gift, but the management offices want their paperwork. We book your elevator window, issue the certificate of insurance the building requires, and bring flat dollies built for the long shared hallways that run the length of these old floors. Open-plan lofts also mean oversized furniture and odd-angle entries, so we measure the tight spots before we ever load.

An arts town, handled like one

Easthampton’s galleries and studio buildings mean we are often moving things most crews rarely touch.

  • Custom padding and crating for canvases, framed work, and sculpture
  • Careful handling for kilns, presses, and heavy studio equipment
  • Loft and walk-up experience, with elevator booking handled for you
  • Certificates of insurance for managed mill properties
  • Heavy floor protection from the truck to your door
  • The same crew loading and unloading, start to finish

Year-round, weather and all

The homes that step up toward Mount Tom can get tricky in a New England winter. We watch the forecast, schedule around the worst of the ice, and protect every floor against snow and salt. Whatever the season, you get one flat quote held by a $110 deposit that credits to your final bill, instead of an hourly clock that speeds up the moment the carry gets long.

Whether it is a pond-side loft or a studio full of work, tell us what you are moving and we will build a plan around it. Get my free moving quote.

We move Easthampton

Our crews work Easthampton week in and week out, so the narrow staircases, the historic-district streets, the parking permits, and any elevator slot are second nature long before the truck pulls up. What we quote is a single flat rate, laid out line by line — no surprise charges lurking in the fine print for you to stumble on later.

02 Why us

Whatever name is painted on the truck is the same one signed at the bottom of your contract

Book Smooth Movers and the truck that pulls up to your Victorian is ours, the contract is ours, and the uniformed crew easing your sofa down those narrow original stairs is on our Pioneer Valley payroll — your job is never sold off. A broker runs the opposite way: they auction your move to whoever bids cheapest that week, then step out of the picture for good.

Smooth Movers
  • The trucks are ours and the full-time, background-checked movers riding in them are on our payroll — we never round out a crew with day labor off a listing board
  • The number we write down is the number you pay — set, signed, and accurate to the dollar before a single box is lifted
  • One crew start to finish, from the first piece out the old door to the last one set down in the new place
  • Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for interstate runs, and every job carried on full insurance with up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage
  • A single point of contact at one Northampton office, with you from that first call right through to the last box carried inside
What a broker does
  • Hands your move to whatever crew underbids the rest in the week you happen to call
  • Watches the total creep upward once moving day arrives, padded with charges nobody raised when you signed
  • Puts people you have never once spoken to inside your front door, leaving your whole household in the hands of a crew you cannot vouch for
  • Leaves it murky which insurer foots the bill the day a flat screen hits the floor
  • Drops a call center in the gap between you and whoever finally turns up to load, so one plain question becomes a runaround

What Easthampton movers ask us

Can you move a loft in one of the converted mill buildings by Nashawannuck Pond?
Yes, mill lofts are some of our favorite jobs in Easthampton. The freight elevators are usually generous but the management offices almost always want a certificate of insurance and a reserved elevator window. Give us the building name and we will book the elevator, pull the COI, and bring the right dollies for those long interior hallways.
Do you have experience moving artists' studios and gallery pieces?
We do. Easthampton has turned into a real arts town, and we regularly move kilns, large canvases, framed work, and studio gear. We custom-pad and crate the fragile pieces and the same crew that wraps them in your studio is the crew that sets them down at the new place.
Is winter scheduling a problem for a Mount Tom hillside address?
We move all winter. For the homes that climb toward the Mount Tom base we keep an eye on the storm track, schedule around Nor'easters when we can, and lay heavy runners so snow and road salt never reach your floors. If a storm forces a shift, we reschedule without games.
