Smooth Movers

One flat number on paper, and the same Smooth Movers crew at both ends — built for the Five-College calendar, steep-staircase triple-deckers and 1900s Victorians, and move days scheduled around the next Nor'easter.

Tell us about the move — we email back one flat rate you can hold us to, most days within the hour

Your written number lands before today’s business hours are up. Free estimate, no strings. Whatever you share stays in our Northampton office — we never sell it off or hand it to a broker.

02 Why us

The truck in front of your triple-decker is ours, and so is everyone carrying boxes down the stairs

When you book Smooth Movers, the truck that parks on your historic-district street is registered to us, and the uniformed movers easing a couch down those steep original stairs are on our payroll. Nobody you have never met touches your things. A broker works the opposite way: it lists your job to the lowest bidder of the week, then steps back once you have signed and let the unknown carrier sort it out.

Smooth Movers
  • Every person on the job is a uniformed, background-checked Smooth Movers employee — no day labor, no handing your keys to whatever carrier was free that morning
  • You sign one flat rate and that is what you pay — the bill at the end matches the quote, down to the dollar
  • The crew that carries the first box out of your Northampton place is the crew that sets the last one down at the new one
  • Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for out-of-state runs, and full coverage on every load
  • The same local office and the same name answering the phone, staying with you from your very first question to the last box through the door
What a broker does
  • Puts your move up for grabs to the cheapest bidder in the week you happen to reach out
  • Stands by while the bill swells on moving day, stacked with charges that were never raised over the phone
  • Loads your whole home onto a truck run by a crew you were never introduced to
  • Falls silent on which policy pays up the moment an item turns up chipped or cracked
  • Wedges a call center in between you and the movers, leaving the people who have your boxes forever one transfer out of reach
03 How we quote

Flat rate.
In writing.
No hourly meter.

First we go through what you actually own, then we lock it to one binding number before anyone lifts a box — no clock running while you watch the total climb. The figure on the quote is the whole bill, and it holds on move day even when the stairs are narrow and the truck is parked half a block down.

Priced once, then locked

an in-home walkthrough or a quick video tour fixes the flat rate, and it does not move after that

No surprise line items

no fuel surcharge, no stair fee for the third-floor walk-up, no long-carry charge for the parking-permit block

Same crew, start to finish

the Smooth Movers crew that loads in Northampton is the one that unloads wherever the move ends

04 Keeping your move safe

What we wrap for a calm October morning is what we wrap for a January ice storm

Every truck rolls out stocked with pads, stretch film, and shrink wrap, so dressers stay padded and drawers stay shut whether we are carrying a sleigh bed down the narrow original stairs of a downtown triple-decker, clearing a full basement and attic in a 1900s Victorian, or threading furniture out of a Smith-area walk-up. In a real New England winter we watch the forecast, schedule around the Nor'easter, and lay heavy floor protection so snow, slush, and road salt never reach your floors — and in fall-foliage season, when half the valley moves at once, we still keep the wrap tight.

Quilted pads

Dressers, tables, and headboards are blanketed right where they stand, padded up before anything starts down a staircase or out a tight historic doorway.

Stretch film

Drawers stay closed and upholstery stays clean, sealed tight against wet snow on the carry to the truck and the salt-spray drive over the Coolidge Bridge.

Floor & stair guards

Before a single box moves, the crew rolls runners over old hardwood, pads the jambs, and wraps the banisters on those steep original stairs — so the trim and rails look the same when we leave as when we arrived.

Built-to-fit crating

A mirror, a glass tabletop, a framed piece, a big screen — each one is measured corner to corner where it sits and boxed in a made-to-size crate before it ever clears the doorway.

Break-down & rebuild

Bed frames, dining tables, and sectionals come apart so they clear narrow stairwells and old doorways, then the crew reassembles each one once it is inside the new place.

Straps, dollies & gear

A third-floor walk-up, a turn-tight triple-decker stairwell, or the single heaviest piece in the house — each one gets the right tie-downs and rigging, and the full kit rides on every truck.

05 How it works
1

Tell us the move

Both addresses, the date you are aiming for, and the size of the home — a few minutes, nothing owed yet.

2

We put the flat rate in writing

We go through your real inventory, factor in the stairs and parking, and lock it to one number you can hold us to.

3

The crew arrives ready

Uniformed and background-checked, on time, with the pads and floor protection set for whatever the New England sky is doing that morning.

4

Done at the quoted price

We load, we drive, we set each room back up — and the final bill is the same number you signed.

Working out of Northampton across the Pioneer Valley

The crew on your street is on the Smooth Movers payroll, not a subcontractor’s

Every truck out there belongs to us and every one is crewed by full-time Smooth Movers employees, so one team handles your Northampton move start to finish — the first box out the door and the last box up the new stairs.

09 Our coverage

Based in Northampton, our trucks cover every corner of the Pioneer Valley

10 Good to know

What Pioneer Valley movers ask us before they book

Are you a moving company?
Yes — Smooth Movers is a fully licensed and insured Northampton, Massachusetts moving company running our own trucks and uniformed crews, with Massachusetts MDPU license and USDOT/MC authority. The trucks are ours and the movers are our employees — nothing brokered out, nobody subcontracted.
How do you set the price?
It starts with a short in-home walkthrough or a video tour. From your real inventory — and a look at the stairs and the parking situation — we put one flat rate in writing, with no hourly meter underneath. That number is the whole price.
How early should I lock in my date?
The Five-College calendar runs the year here — late August into September for move-ins, May for move-outs — and fall-foliage weekends fill fast, so aim for three or four weeks of lead time on those. Winter, midweek, and mid-month dates open up sooner, and when a crew has a slot we are glad to take a last-minute or same-week job.
What kinds of moves does your crew take?
Everything from local jobs around Northampton and across Hampshire County to long hauls down I-91 or out the Mass Pike to most of the country. Triple-decker walk-ups, full-basement-and-attic Victorians, dorm and faculty moves around Smith and the Five Colleges — all routine. Pianos, gun safes, and antiques are part of the work too.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — Smooth Movers holds a Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for interstate work, and full cargo and liability coverage. If a building or condo board needs a certificate of insurance, send us the requirement and a same-day COI is almost always on the way.
Can you handle a third-floor walk-up or a tight historic-district street?
That is most of what we do. Steep narrow original staircases, second- and third-floor triple-decker units, on-street parking permits, and freight-elevator windows in converted mill lofts are everyday work — tell us the address and the floor and we sort out parking and access before the truck shows.
Got a piano, a gun safe, or something genuinely heavy?
No problem — uprights, baby grands, and full grands are regular jobs, and the crew arrives with the boards, straps, and stair-rigging the piece calls for. Gun safes, heavy antiques, and oversized art get the same slow, careful handling, narrow stairs and all.
Do you pack, and do you bring the supplies?
We do — book a full pack and we box the whole house, or a partial and we cover just the rooms with the breakables. The boxes, paper, and tape come in on our truck.

Have a date in mind? Hand it to the crew at Smooth Movers.

Send us both addresses and the date you are aiming for, and a flat-rate quote in writing lands in your inbox — most days inside the hour.
