01 Overview

Amherst runs on the college calendar, and after years of moving the Pioneer Valley we plan around it instead of fighting it. When UMass, Amherst College, and Hampshire all turn over in late August and again in May, half the town is carrying boxes at the same time. Smooth Movers keeps crews held back for those weeks so students, grad students, and faculty heading out on sabbatical actually get a truck when they need one. We are a licensed Massachusetts (MDPU) and USDOT/MC mover running our own fleet out of Northampton, so it is our crew on both ends, never a stranger we handed your job to.

Moving somewhere around here? Pioneer Valley movers runs these Pioneer Valley streets, Victorians, and walk-up triple-deckers week in and week out.

Built for the way Amherst lives

Most of what we carry here is not a single-family house with a wide driveway. It is a third-floor apartment over a shop near the town common, a faculty colonial off South Pleasant, or a shared rental on a side street with a parking permit taped to the windshield. We scout the stairs and the on-street parking before we quote, so the flat number we give you holds even when the carry is long.

The Route 9 corridor and beyond

Route 9 is the spine that ties Amherst to Hadley and back over the Coolidge Bridge to Northampton, and we run it constantly. Whether you are crossing town or relocating across the valley, our dispatcher routes around the lunch-hour crawl past the big-box plazas so the truck arrives on schedule.

  • Dorm, apartment, and faculty-house moves timed to your assigned slot
  • Walk-up and tight-stairwell experience on every crew
  • Certificates of insurance issued for managed buildings
  • Heavy floor and rail protection, padded turns on narrow staircases
  • Specialty handling for pianos, lab equipment, and book-heavy households
  • One flat quote, with local rates of two movers and a truck at $179 an hour or three movers and a truck at $249 an hour when you would rather go hourly

A flat number you can trust

A $110 deposit holds your date and comes straight off the final bill. No padding for the long carry, no hourly meter running while you hunt for the parking permit. Tell us the building and the date and we will put together a plan that fits the week Amherst is actually moving.

We move Amherst

Our crews work Amherst week in and week out, so the narrow staircases, the historic-district streets, the parking permits, and any elevator slot are second nature long before the truck pulls up. What we quote is a single flat rate, laid out line by line — no surprise charges lurking in the fine print for you to stumble on later.

02 Why us

Whatever name is painted on the truck is the same one signed at the bottom of your contract

Book Smooth Movers and the truck that pulls up to your Victorian is ours, the contract is ours, and the uniformed crew easing your sofa down those narrow original stairs is on our Pioneer Valley payroll — your job is never sold off. A broker runs the opposite way: they auction your move to whoever bids cheapest that week, then step out of the picture for good.

Smooth Movers
  • The trucks are ours and the full-time, background-checked movers riding in them are on our payroll — we never round out a crew with day labor off a listing board
  • The number we write down is the number you pay — set, signed, and accurate to the dollar before a single box is lifted
  • One crew start to finish, from the first piece out the old door to the last one set down in the new place
  • Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for interstate runs, and every job carried on full insurance with up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage
  • A single point of contact at one Northampton office, with you from that first call right through to the last box carried inside
What a broker does
  • Hands your move to whatever crew underbids the rest in the week you happen to call
  • Watches the total creep upward once moving day arrives, padded with charges nobody raised when you signed
  • Puts people you have never once spoken to inside your front door, leaving your whole household in the hands of a crew you cannot vouch for
  • Leaves it murky which insurer foots the bill the day a flat screen hits the floor
  • Drops a call center in the gap between you and whoever finally turns up to load, so one plain question becomes a runaround

“Second time using them, second time they delivered. These guys are class at what they do and they were very professional. They wrapped things I didn’t consider wrapping, they were friendly, and they were very fast. I 100% plan on using them when I move again!”

What Amherst movers ask us

Can you handle a UMass or Amherst College move-in or move-out during the busy August and May weeks?
Yes, and we book those weeks early because the whole Five-College calendar moves at once. Tell us the dorm, the apartment, or the faculty house and your assigned time slot, and we will lock a crew so you are not circling Pleasant Street looking for parking. The same uniformed Smooth Movers crew loads in Amherst and unloads wherever you land.
Do you bring a certificate of insurance for managed apartment buildings near campus?
We do. A lot of the newer rental complexes off Route 9 and around the town center require a COI naming the property before they will release the loading dock or elevator. Send Erin in our office the building's requirements a few days out and we will have the certificate issued and emailed before move day.
My place is a second-floor walk-up off the town common with no elevator. Is that a problem?
Not at all. A big share of Amherst rentals are walk-ups with tight original stairwells, and our crews run them every week. We pad the turns, use shoulder dollies on the heavy pieces, and quote one flat number up front so a long carry up two flights never turns into a surprise on the invoice.
