01 Overview

You bring the truck, we bring the muscle to load and unload it

Sometimes you do not need a full-service move; you need strong, experienced hands and you have the truck handled. Maybe you rented a U-Haul, you are loading a pod, or a relative is driving the trailer and you just need the heavy stuff carried out without anyone throwing out their back. Smooth Movers does labor-only loading and unloading, and you get the same professional crew that handles our full moves, not random day labor off an app. We are a licensed Massachusetts company; our movers are trained, uniformed, and insured.

Whether the job is in Amherst or downtown Northampton, Smooth Movers hands you one flat number up front and holds it — nothing creeps onto the bill on move day.

Packing a truck right takes more than strong arms

Anyone can carry a box. Packing a truck or container so it survives a highway haul without crushing the lamp or letting the dresser slide is the actual job. Our crew tetris-packs the cube tight, pads the surfaces that rub, and straps the load in tiers so nothing shifts when you brake on I-91. A badly loaded truck is how furniture gets wrecked on a move you thought you saved money on; a well-loaded one rides clean to the destination.

The hard parts are still our job

  • Third-floor walk-ups and steep narrow staircases
  • Full basements and attics that have to be cleared
  • Heavy single pieces that need two or three movers
  • Tight downtown doorways and triple-decker turns
  • Floor and entry protection against winter snow and salt

What you handle, what we handle

You supply the truck, trailer, or container and make sure it is on site and ready when we arrive; we supply the crew, the pads, the dollies, and the straps, and we do the lifting and the loading. We can load at the old place, unload at the new one, or both as separate jobs.

Straightforward hourly rates

Labor-only runs at our flat hourly rates, two movers at $179/hr or three at $249/hr, and a $110 deposit reserves your time slot and is credited to the final total. Book ahead during the May and August college turnover, when crews go fast. Get my free moving quote and tell us your truck size and the stairs involved, and we will line up the right crew.

What’s included

  • Experienced Smooth Movers crew to load or unload your rental truck, trailer, or pod
  • Pro packing of the truck cube so a tight load rides safely and nothing shifts on the highway
  • Heavy lifting up and down steep narrow staircases and into full basements and attics
  • Floor runners and door protection laid against snow, salt, and mud at your home
  • Furniture pads, dollies, and straps brought by the crew, used to secure the load
  • Hourly labor at flat published rates, with a $110 deposit holding your time slot

How the price gets set

We start with a short walkthrough or video survey, and from your actual inventory we set one flat Pioneer Valley rate — no hourly meter buried anywhere inside it. Whatever that quote reads is the whole price, with nothing added once the truck is loaded or a Nor’easter pushes the date.

02 How we protect your move

We handle what you own the way we would want ours handled

Every truck rolls out stocked with pads, shrink film, and heavy floor runners — ready to blanket furniture, keep original hardwood and stair treads clean through snow and road salt, and cushion the breakables, whether it is an 1890s Victorian in town, a converted-mill loft in Easthampton, or a downtown triple-decker with a freight elevator to reserve.

Quilted pads

Dressers, harvest tables, and headboards get blanketed right where they stand, with the padding on well before anything heads for the stairs.

Stretch film

Drawers stay shut and cushions stay clean — wrapped tight so basement dust and a wet, salted walk to the curb never touch the fabric.

Floor & doorway guards

Runners down, banisters wrapped, jambs padded — the first thing we do at both homes, so a century-old staircase and refinished floors look untouched after we pull out.

Built-to-fit crating

Right there in the room, before anything fragile leaves it, we measure a mirror, glass tabletop, framed canvas, or flat screen corner to corner and build the crate around it for a tight, exact fit.

Break-down & rebuild

Bed frames, dining tables, and sectionals come apart to ride safe, and once they are up the new stairs our crew puts every one back together.

Straps, dollies & gear

A steep third-floor walk-up, a tight historic-district turn, or the single heaviest piece in the house — each one calls up the right tie-downs and rigging off our truck, and none of it gets left behind.

03 Why us

Whatever name is painted on the truck is the same one signed at the bottom of your contract

Book Smooth Movers and the truck that pulls up to your Victorian is ours, the contract is ours, and the uniformed crew easing your sofa down those narrow original stairs is on our Pioneer Valley payroll — your job is never sold off. A broker runs the opposite way: they auction your move to whoever bids cheapest that week, then step out of the picture for good.

Smooth Movers
  • The trucks are ours and the full-time, background-checked movers riding in them are on our payroll — we never round out a crew with day labor off a listing board
  • The number we write down is the number you pay — set, signed, and accurate to the dollar before a single box is lifted
  • One crew start to finish, from the first piece out the old door to the last one set down in the new place
  • Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for interstate runs, and every job carried on full insurance with up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage
  • A single point of contact at one Northampton office, with you from that first call right through to the last box carried inside
What a broker does
  • Hands your move to whatever crew underbids the rest in the week you happen to call
  • Watches the total creep upward once moving day arrives, padded with charges nobody raised when you signed
  • Puts people you have never once spoken to inside your front door, leaving your whole household in the hands of a crew you cannot vouch for
  • Leaves it murky which insurer foots the bill the day a flat screen hits the floor
  • Drops a call center in the gap between you and whoever finally turns up to load, so one plain question becomes a runaround

Questions we hear about this service

I rented a U-Haul and just need muscle to load it. Do you do that?
We do. Plenty of valley customers drive their own truck, trailer, or pod and hire our crew to do the heavy lifting and the loading. We bring pads, dollies, and straps, and we pack the cube tight so your load does not shift on the Mass Pike. You handle the driving; we handle the lifting.
Can your crew carry everything up to a third-floor walk-up?
Yes, stairs are most of what we do here. Whether it is hauling a couch up to a third-floor apartment near Smith or down from a triple-decker, our crew is built for steep, narrow staircases and the basements and attics that come with older valley homes. Labor-only does not mean we skip the hard parts.
How is labor-only priced?
Loading and unloading labor is billed hourly at our published rates, $179/hr for two movers or $249/hr for three, and a $110 deposit holds your slot and comes off the total. Because there is no Smooth Movers truck involved, your truck or container has to be on site and ready when our crew arrives.
