A Pioneer Valley crew, owned and run from Northampton

Nate Sullivan grew up in this valley and spent years running warehouse and freight logistics before he started Smooth Movers in 2017. He kept watching neighbors get burned by hourly crews — a quote that sounded fine on the phone, then a final bill that climbed every time the meter ran long on the stairs. So he built a company on one idea: tell people the real number up front, run our own trucks, and stand behind it. Today Smooth Movers is sixteen people, twelve of them movers, all on our own payroll.

The people who handle your move

Erin Callahan runs the office — scheduling, certificates of insurance for the downtown buildings that require them, and billing you will actually understand. Pete Donnelly works the dispatch board and decides which truck and crew fit your building and your timing. On the trucks, Liam Frye leads our specialty and piano work, Dev Patel runs our long-haul crews out to other states, and Gabe Tierney is the chief we send when a job means triple-deckers and steep narrow staircases. They train the rest of the crew the same way, so the standard does not change with the truck.

Why licensed and insured matters here

We are a fully licensed and insured Massachusetts moving company. We carry a Massachusetts MDPU household-goods license for in-state work and USDOT and MC authority for interstate, and we hold our own cargo and liability coverage. That is not boilerplate. When a Smith building or a Holyoke mill-loft management company asks for a COI before move day, Erin sends it the same day. When something needs to be made right, you deal with us — not a faceless network that took a referral fee and disappeared.

What we will not do

We will not pretend a hard move is easy, and we will not lowball you to win the job and pad the bill later. We do not subcontract, we do not broker your move to strangers, and we do not show up with day labor we met that morning. The crew chief who walks your place is responsible for it start to finish. That is the whole point of doing this ourselves. Call our office and talk to a person who will actually be involved in your move.

“I wanted to give a college town an honest flat-rate crew instead of an hourly clock that keeps running”

Grew up in the Pioneer Valley. Nate stays hands-on with every job, so the number you are quoted holds and the crew at your door is one Smooth Movers hired, trained, and put in uniform from day one.

02 Why us

Whatever name is painted on the truck is the same one signed at the bottom of your contract

Book Smooth Movers and the truck that pulls up to your Victorian is ours, the contract is ours, and the uniformed crew easing your sofa down those narrow original stairs is on our Pioneer Valley payroll — your job is never sold off. A broker runs the opposite way: they auction your move to whoever bids cheapest that week, then step out of the picture for good.

Smooth Movers
  • The trucks are ours and the full-time, background-checked movers riding in them are on our payroll — we never round out a crew with day labor off a listing board
  • The number we write down is the number you pay — set, signed, and accurate to the dollar before a single box is lifted
  • One crew start to finish, from the first piece out the old door to the last one set down in the new place
  • Massachusetts (MDPU) household-goods license, USDOT/MC authority for interstate runs, and every job carried on full insurance with up to $1,000,000 in cargo coverage
  • A single point of contact at one Northampton office, with you from that first call right through to the last box carried inside
What a broker does
  • Hands your move to whatever crew underbids the rest in the week you happen to call
  • Watches the total creep upward once moving day arrives, padded with charges nobody raised when you signed
  • Puts people you have never once spoken to inside your front door, leaving your whole household in the hands of a crew you cannot vouch for
  • Leaves it murky which insurer foots the bill the day a flat screen hits the floor
  • Drops a call center in the gap between you and whoever finally turns up to load, so one plain question becomes a runaround
